Ralph’s writing and commentary have been featured in national media including Op Ed columns for the New York Times. His work at the State level has resulted in the passage of the Farm Distillery Act which permits New York farms to establish distilleries on site and sell their agricultural spirits at the farm. Born and raised a New Yorker, he has realized a lifelong dream of settling in the Hudson Valley.

Perhaps it was something about the rainy, overcast weather that made Tuthilltown seem like something out of a movie. It was the Friday before Memorial Day weekend and the Hudson Valley farm distillery was quiet. A cat, later to be identified as Bourbon, lazed on the porch. Mud stirred with the pouring rain and apple trees dotted a hazy horizon. Everything was in place, perfectly serene.

Part of the reason for Ms. Townsend Duval’s insistence on glassware is her belief that spirits, like wine, are enhanced or diminished by glassware. “It’s a different experience drinking a cocktail out of the proper glassware or drinking it out of plastic tumbler,” she said. New York’s mixologist community would certainly agree even if other event organizers teased Ms. Townsend Duval for having a “death wish.”

At this weekend’s Manhattan Cocktail Classic, many drinks were thrown back, recipes exchanged, and new artisanal spirits tested in order to find the biggest bar trends of the season. (We’ve got a tough job here at Redbook, we know.) To our total surprise, one drink stood out as our new favorite summer sipper: Atsby Vermouth, which represents a whole new class of “American” or “new” vermouth, made from local ingredients in small batches here in the States.

After a visit to Tuthilltown Distillery, I came home armed with the knowledge to pair maple syrup and bourbon together. Whoever originally thought to do this may just be the smartest person alive. This combination had to be shared with the world and I thought, what better way than in milkshake form?
We took a tour of the distillery for Joe’s birthday. We got to see a bit of the process of making bourbon and where all the processing happens. At the end of the tour there was a tasting and that’s where we happened upon the magic of bourbon and maple syrup.

What is Moonshine?
The traditional definition of moonshine is any liquor, from whiskey to vodka, that is distilled in an unlicensed distillery. Most moonshine is made from corn, though. The illegally made version is sometimes referred to as “white lightning” or “hooch,” in part due to its high alcohol content of around 150 proof, and partly due to the fact that taxes aren’t paid on it.

“After wanting to visit for many years Lynn and I finally got to to visit the first distillery to open in NY in over 80 years namely Tuthilltown Spirits upstate in Gardiner, New York. We had tried some of the initial offerings on Long Island like the Baby Bourbon Whiskey and were suitably impressed with the flavor which was smooth but with a subtle, pleasant burn that many of the commercial whiskeys unfortunately lack.”
